The Good Shepherd

Have you ever noticed that Jesus never made idle boasts?  Everything He claimed about Himself, He demonstrated in real time for all to witness.

In the book of John (John 10:11), Jesus declared that He was the Good Shepherd who lays His life down for the sheep.  That wasn’t just nice sounding hyperbole…He went on to prove it.  We all know that He indeed did lay down His life for us on the cross…showing that He not only talks the talk, but also walks the walk. (including the literal walk He made, when He carried the cross to Golgatha.)

Have you ever noticed that there are other examples of the Good Shepherd in action.

In the 23rd Psalm, David declares, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside quiet waters.”

Here too, Jesus proved His words with real life demonstrations of the actions of a Good Shepherd.

Look in Matthew 14:13-18.  It says that He made the people sit down in the grass so He and the disciples could keep them from being in want by feeding them…supernaturally multiplying the fish and the loaves.  (In this, He was also demonstrating another title he claimed…”The Bread of Life”.)

Notice in the same chapter of Matthew (Matt. 14:22-32), Jesus also calmed the troubled seas that the disciples were experiencing in the boat.  He literally led them beside quiet waters, once again proving scripture’s prophecy about the “Good Shepherd”.  How good is that?  He is the Good Shepherd!
